RLSTuner
The RLSTuner package is a highly effective PID tuning tool developed by Robust Control & Sensor Solutions.
Collaborative Controls prefers this tuning package because it has always provided stable tuning constants, even when the dynamics of the process are extremely complex.
RLS Tuner uses the frequency domain model of the process system and the known action of a PID control algorithm to calculate the preferred control tuning while avoiding oscillator systems. This robust-control theory methodology is known as loop-shaping because the desired shape of the frequency vs. amplitude factor (a Bode diagram) of the closed-loop system is shaped to meet performance requirements (the speed and setpoint tracking) while maintaining control robustness constraints of stability and disturbance (noise) rejection.
The tuning provided by RLSTuner has:
- High gain at low frequency, resulting in good SP tracking and low frequency disturbance rejection.
- A maximum aggressiveness determined by the crossover frequency where amplitude factor equals 1 (0 dB)
- Low gain at high frequency, to attenuate noise
- A maximum phase-shift of 45 to 60 degrees to ensure stability.
Within these constraints, RLS uses these design criteria to determine robust PID tuning constants for a range of aggressiveness ratings.
The RLSTuner package provides:
- A frequency domain model identifier with a PID tuning calculation
- A Laplace dynamic model identifier (using the same input data as the frequency domain identifier)
- A simulation tool which allows simulation of control action with process model deviation
